History

    The student understands major eras, individuals, events, and themes in history at the grade-level scope and how they shaped communities, states, nations, and the world.

  • Cause and Effect

    The student analyzes the causes and effects of significant events in history.

  • Continuity and Change

    The student explains the continuity and change over time of social, political, and economic structures.

Geography
  • Maps and Place

    The student uses maps, globes, and other geographic tools to identify locations, regions, and physical and human features at the grade-level scope.

  • Human-Environment Interaction

    The student analyzes how people adapt to and modify their environments and how those interactions shape regions and cultures.

  • The student examines patterns of migration, trade, and cultural diffusion across regions.

Economics
  • Goods, Services, and Markets

    The student understands how producers and consumers, supply and demand, and markets work together in a free-enterprise system.

  • Personal Financial Literacy

    The student applies economic reasoning to personal decisions about earning, spending, saving, and credit at the grade-level scope.

Government
  • Foundations of Government

    The student understands the structure and functions of the American constitutional system, including the separation of powers and federalism.

  • Texas Government

    The student understands the structure and functions of Texas government and its relationship to local and federal government.

Citizenship
  • Rights and Responsibilities

    The student understands the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a constitutional republic.

  • Civic Participation

    The student identifies ways individuals and groups engage in the political process and contribute to their communities.

Culture
  • Cultural Contributions

    The student understands the contributions of people from various racial, ethnic, gender, and religious groups to Texas, the United States, and the world.

  • Comparing Cultures

    The student compares cultural traits and shared experiences across regions and time periods.

Science, Technology, and Society
  • Science, Technology, and Society

    The student understands the impact of science and technology on social, political, and economic developments.

Social Studies Skills
  • Source Analysis

    The student applies critical-thinking skills to analyze primary and secondary sources, distinguishing fact from opinion.

  • Communicate Findings

    The student communicates social studies information in written, oral, and visual forms supported by evidence.

  • Problem Solving and Decision Making

    The student applies problem-solving and decision-making processes to identify problems, gather evidence, generate options, and predict outcomes.

Assessments
The state tests students at this grade and subject take.
National Monitoring

NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress)

Federally administered sample-based assessment in reading, mathematics, science, writing, and other subjects. NAEP results inform state-by-state comparisons rather than individual student or school accountability.
